🎯 Lesson Goal
In this lesson, we will explore why English speakers use the Passive Voice so often, especially when compared to Spanish and Portuguese.
- Understand the structure of the passive voice (Verb 'To Be' + Past Participle).
- Recognize when English prefers passive constructions while Spanish/Portuguese prefer active or reflexive constructions.
- Correct common transfer errors, such as saying "I born" instead of "I was born."
🔥 Warm-up: The "To Be Born" Problem
Look at the sentences below. Why does English use a different structure than Spanish or Portuguese to talk about entering the world?
| English | Spanish / Portuguese | What is the difference? |
|---|---|---|
| I was born in 1990. | Yo nací en 1990. Eu nasci em 1990. | English uses a passive structure ("to be" + "born"). Romance languages use an active verb! |
| English is spoken here. | Aquí se habla inglés. Aqui fala-se inglês. | English uses the passive. Spanish/Portuguese use a reflexive pronoun ("se"). |
📘 Main Rules
Rule 1: The Formula
Subject + Be + Past Participle
Change the verb 'to be' to match the tense. (is/are, was/were, has been).
Rule 2: When to use it?
Use it when the action is more important than the person doing it, or when you don't know who did it.
| Structure | English Example | Romance Equivalent (Mental Trap) |
|---|---|---|
| Passive Voice | The house was built in 2020. | Se construyó / Foi construída (Reflexive or Passive) |
| Passive Voice | The documents were signed. | Se firmaron / Assinaram-se (Reflexive) |
| Passive for "Nacer" | He was born in July. | Él nació / Ele nasceu (Active Verb) |
