| Singular | Plural | Pronunciation | Syllables |
|---|---|---|---|
| crate | crates | KRAYTS | 1 |
| cage | cages | KAY-jiz | 2 |
Crates does not add a new syllable. But cages does add a new syllable.

📘 The Three Plural Sounds
Plural -s / -es can have three different sounds.
1. Quiet sounds → /s/
Use /s/ after quiet final sounds like /p/, /t/, /k/, and /f/.
- cup → cups
- cat → cats
- book → books
- crate → crates
2. Vibrating sounds → /z/
Use /z/ after sounds where your voice vibrates, and after vowel sounds.
- dog → dogs
- room → rooms
- day → days
- teacher → teachers
3. Hissing sounds → /ɪz/
Use /ɪz/ after sounds similar to s, z, sh, ch, or j.
- bus → buses
- class → classes
- dish → dishes
- watch → watches
- cage → cages
🗣️ Feel the Difference
Put your fingers on your throat and say these sounds:
| Sound | Try it | What happens? |
|---|---|---|
| /s/ | ssssss | No strong vibration |
| /z/ | zzzzzz | Your throat vibrates |
| /ɪz/ | iz | A small extra syllable |
❌ Common Mistake
Do not add an extra syllable to every plural.
| Wrong | Correct | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| crate-iz | crates = KRAYTS | crate ends in /t/, so the ending is /s/. |
| dog-iz | dogs = DOGZ | dog ends in /g/, so the ending is /z/. |
| cagez | cages = KAY-jiz | cage ends in /dʒ/, so we add /ɪz/. |
✏️ Practice A — Choose the Sound

🔢 Practice B — Count the Syllables

🌎 Spanish Connection
In Spanish, plural -es often creates a clear extra syllable.
| Spanish | English | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
| ES: clase → clases | class → classes | Both add a syllable. |
| ES: caja → cajas | box → boxes | English adds /ɪz/ after the /ks/ sound. |
| ES: perros | dogs | English does not add an extra syllable: DOGZ. |
| ES: libros | books | English does not add an extra syllable: BOOKS. |
🔗 Bonus Connection: Regular Past -ed
English uses a similar idea with regular past tense -ed.
| Ending | Possible sounds | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Plural -s / -es | /s/, /z/, /ɪz/ | cats, dogs, cages |
| Past -ed | /t/, /d/, /ɪd/ | worked, played, wanted |
