🎯 Lesson Goal

In this lesson, you will learn to hear and pronounce three important English vowel sounds:

/ɪ/ relaxed short i

As in sit, fish, and win.

/ɛ/ open short e

As in set, pen, and red.

/i/ clear long e

As in seat, sheep, and tree.

🎧 Listening first: First, learn to hear the difference. Then practice saying it. If you cannot hear the difference yet, pronunciation will be harder.
⚠️ Careful: English /ɪ/ is not Spanish i. It is shorter, more relaxed, and a little closer to e.
Don’t overcorrect: ship should not sound like sheep, but it also should not sound like shep. The sound /ɪ/ is between Spanish i and e, but it is not exactly e.
Main idea: /i/ is high and clear. /ɪ/ is relaxed and short. /ɛ/ is open, like a more open English “e.”

📊 Quick Comparison

Sound Example Mouth Position Spanish Connection
/ɪ/ sit, fish, win Relaxed, short, mid-high Between Spanish i and e
/ɛ/ set, pen, red More open, mid-low Similar to Spanish e, but a little more open
/i/ seat, sheep, tree High, front, clear, usually longer than /ɪ/ Similar to Spanish i, but often longer in English
💡 IPA note: Some dictionaries write the long e sound as /i/. Others write it as /iː/. In this American English lesson, we use /i/.
